Why Cristiano Ronaldo has snubbed Ballon d’Or ceremony despite being nominated for award | Football | Sport

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to avoid tonight’s Ballon d’Or award ceremony because he has missed out on the top prize. Although the official results have not yet to be revealed to the public, reports claim that the nominated players have been made aware of the overall winner.

Lionel Messi is set to be crowned as the best player in the world for the sixth time, after going three years without winning between 2016 and 2018.

Ronaldo took home the trophy in 2016 and 2017 with Luca Modric reigning triumphant at the last award giving in 2018 for his Champions League and World Cup heroics.

Goal France have claimed that Ronaldo, 34, will instead be attending the Gran Gala del Calcio, which is the annual Italian football awards, on Monday evening in Milan.

Ronaldo will be there to pick up his award for winning the Italian Football Association’s Footballer of the Year for 2019, despite failing to end his first full season at Juventus as the league’s top scorer.

Ronaldo issued a cryptic statement after Messi won the top prize at the FIFA Best Awards in September, just a month after missing out on the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award.

He wrote: “Verified patience and persistence are two characteristics that differentiate the professional from the amateur. Everything that is big today has started small.

“You can’t do everything, but do everything you can to make your dreams come true. Keep in mind that after night always comes dawn.”

The update means that Virgil van Dijk will also miss out despite helping Liverpool to Champions League glory and to within a point of the Premier League title.

Jurgen Klopp had backed his player to win after the Netherlands international’s consistent displays helping transform the team’s prospects, but outlined why Messi will always be a threat.

“If you give the Ballon d’Or to the best player of this generation then you should give it always to Lionel Messi. That’s how it is,” Klopp said.

“But if you give it to the best player of last season, then it was Virgil van Dijk. I don’t know exactly how it will work but that is how I see it.

“The best player of all? That’s Lionel. Best player of last season? That’s Virgil. We will see.”
