Phoebe Waller-Bridge: Fleabag star takes on Love Island for Saturday Night Live | Ents & Arts News

British star Phoebe-Waller Bridge took on hosting duties for this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, mocking Love Island and her own rise to fame.

The Emmy Award-winning creator and star of hit sitcom Fleabag fronted the popular US show alongside pop star guest Taylor Swift.

The 34-year-old opened the comedy programme with a monologue that referenced her rise to stardom and her Britishness.

Waller-Bridge joked: “People often assume that I’m like the character, Fleabag, simply because I wrote it. Sexually depraved, foul mouthed, and dangerous. And I always have to say, ‘Yes, you’re absolutely right’.”

Referring to Fleabag’s triumphant evening at the biggest awards show in TV last month, she said: “Back in the day horny women were to be feared, and now they’re given Emmys!”

She continued her monologue by stating: “Sexual conversation for women is expanding. The weirder your fantasy, the more open you are about it, the cooler you are.

“Oh, you locked your husband in the attic? Rock on, sister.”

The Killing Eve writer’s monologue was well-received by the audience inside studio 8H, where the long-running SNL has been filmed since its inception in 1975.

As part of the sketch, SNL cast members devised a Love Island segment, with Waller-Bridge looking almost unrecognisable in a black wig, prosthetic nose and orange tan.

“Just got my lips done – I asked the doctor for an allergic reaction,” she said in her best Essex accent.

She had the audience in stitches after being snubbed by her chosen suitor in the villa, saying: “The whole thing’s a bit muggy.”

However she was celebrating by the end of the sketch when her character discovered how many social media followers she had earned.

The three-time Emmy-Award winner was joined on the show by Swift, who performed two songs, including the title track from her most recent album, Lover.

The 29-year-old singer returned towards the end of the show to perform False God, another song from the record.

SNL’s cold open, one of the show’s most infamous features, poked fun at Donald Trump’s impeachment, with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off star Matthew Broderick starring as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
