ENGLAND 5-1 KOSOVO

HT: Think England are going to edge this one, folks.

ENGLAND 5-1 KOSOVO | SANCHO

46: GOAL! England continue their free-scoring form in Euro 2020 qualification. Gareth Southgate’s side have a FIFTH before the break with Jadon Sancho grabbing a second.

He points to Raheem Sterling after the Manchester City star does everything but put it in the net for him.

Aged 19 years and 159 days, Jadon Sancho is the youngest player to score more than once in an international for England since Wayne Rooney against Croatia in June 2004 (18 years, 241 days).

ENGLAND 4-1 KOSOVO | SANCHO

44: GOAL! If it wasn’t game, set and match before – it certainly is now as Jadon Sancho adds a fourth. What an empathic response from 1-0 down after 34 seconds.

Kosovo are trying to be so expansive and that plays into England’s hands. Raheem Sterling nips into the box before sliding it out for Sancho to turn and convert.

43: Surely that’s game, set and match England.

40: Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling have combined for six goals since Gareth Southgate took charge of England; at least three times as many as any other duo in this period.

Oh, and the passionate Bernard Challandes is booked for his protests.

ENGLAND 3-1 KOSOVO | VOJVODA

38: GOAL! England are ahead and Kosovo manager Bernard Challandes is absolutely livid. I’ll explain why.

The visitors are furious because they had a man down inured in the build-up. England din’t appear to notice so continued to play.

Jadon Sancho drives down the flank before sending a low cross across the face of goal that Vojvoda turns in.

37: OK, who brought the vuvuzelas? Such an awful sound. The England band do their best to drown them out but it’s not working. You might like to mute your television sets.

34: Corner to England. Ben Chilwell trots over to deliver as Michael Keane and Harry Maguire trundle into the box… over! The Everton defender rises highest but blazes the header miles over the crossbar.

31: Nice counter from England. Quite rare for the Three Lions to have those kinds of opportunities at home. Jordan Henderson brings it forward but his prodded pass to Raheem Sterling is intercepted by Rrahmani.

28: Shall we always play at St Mary’s?

25: Haven’t seen much from Jadon Sancho yet tonight. Well we hadn’t until he just roasted his man and laid it off for Ross Barkley. The Chelsea ace sends it over.

More control about England now. That’s not to say that Kosovo aren’t pressing still – I don’t think that’ll change until the final whistle.

22: I was going to say ‘panic over’ but I’m not so sure. Berisha somehow manages to send in a wonderful cross from the left that JUST rolls ahead of the arriving Muriqi.

ENGLAND 2-1 KOSOVO | KANE

19: GOAL! Guess who? Harry Kane gives England the lead with a very Harry Kane-esque finish to round off a lovely move.

Raheem Sterling is the architect, of course. He drives through the middle of the Kosovo defence before slipping it over for the Tottenham talisman, who opens his body and sends it through Muric’s legs.

17: Raheem Sterling has scored eight goals in his last eight appearances for England, with five of those coming in home games.

15: Huddersfield’s Florent Hadergjonaj – whom was part of my Fantasy Football team last season, is getting down the line well for the visitors. Ben Chilwell just about hacks away his deep cross.

12: Leicester’s Ben Chilwell drives down that left channel (as he will all night) before winning a corner that shockingly England aren’t able to convert.

9: England look to have regained their swagger after the early set-back. Kosovo have barely touched the ball since their 34-second opener.

ENGLAND 1-1 KOSOVO | STERLING

7: GOAL! Corner’s WERE a guaranteed goal or penalty in the World Cup and tonight is no different as England draw level.

Michael Keane earns some kind of redemption when heading a corner to the far post where Raheem Sterling was waiting to head home.

That’s two assists for Keane in the first seven minutes…

6: Corner to England. In the World Cup this was a guaranteed goal or penalty.

3: And there’s me expecting a nice, quiet start while England gather their bearings. Kosovo weren’t having any of it and their already boisterous fans are going ballistic. England have been in control since with the visitors pressing like their lives depended on it.

ENGLAND 0-1 KOSOVO | BERISHA

1: GOAL! Urm… well that wasn’t in the script.

England are silenced inside 40 seconds as Valon Berisha gives Kosovo a shock lead.

It was a complete gift from Michael Keane, whose terrible sideways pass was intercepted by the Lazio forward. He picks his spot and curls it nicely over Jordan Pickford.

ENGLAND 0-0 KOSOVO

1: Y’all ready for the England? Excellent, we’re underway at a semi-full St Mary’s Stadium.

Predictions…

19:43: This is going to be way tougher than expected. Kosovo will score at some point in my opinion – so I’ll plump for a brave 2-1.

Anthems

19:40: Don’t think I’ve ever heard the Kosovo national anthem before. It’s a rather solemn one and there don’t seem to be any words – but I like it. Feels like the music to a Tom Hanks movie.

England follow next and it’s belted out in St Mary’s. Excellent effort, everyone.

Twitter round-up

Steve: Rather than moan that Maddison & Mount aren’t playing why don’t we celebrate the many options we have? Only three years ago we were saying we have no ball players. Now we have an abundance. Just wait until Foden gets in.

Sarah Jenkins: How is Barkley still in the starting line-up? So wasteful! Maddison twice the player and would put it on a plate for the likes of Kane and Sterling. Poor quality of the opposition will again makes us look good and no questions asked

Agreed Sarah. Not sure he’s twice the player but he’s certainly worth a start in my humble opinion.

Freshen things up

19:30: England manager Gareth Southgate on ITV Sport: “Jadon Sancho is in to freshen up the team. We have good players to come in and it’s a chance in the wide areas to refresh the group.

“His ability one against one to beat players, his decision making is excellent. His number of goals and assists at Dortmund speaks for itself.

“Our full-backs are all good players. We are very strong in that area.”

Why St Mary’s?

19:25: So the decision NOT to play at Wembley is part of the FA’s initiative to take England on a tour around the country so everyone can have the opportunity to seem them live.

It’s only England’s second match at St Mary’s Stadium and first since October 2002, when they drew 2-2 with Macedonia in a Euro 2004 qualifier.

Roy Keane…

19:20: Yes, Roy Keane is in the ITV studio this evening. Always a pleasure to see Roy taking chunks out of anything that moves.

He’s actually been very balanced about Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

“The only issue I’d have with Rashford, I think it’s great for any young player to learn his trade playing in a few different positions, what he’s got to be careful of is that he doesn’t become Jack of all trades and master of none,” Keane said on ITV.

“That’s your worry for Rashford. It’s up to the player himself to obviously give Ole a headache and say ‘listen, I want to be main striker here’, obviously selling Lukaku, and give the manager that headache. If you ask me between the two players I think he’d get more goals than Martial.”

Twitter round-up

Jim: We will probably still win which gives him the excuse not to change it but a very poor and uninspiring midfield selection again from Southgate. Maddison is twice the player Barkley is and I don’t see what more he can do to show he deserves a chance.

Marcus: As a Norwich fan, I spent a whole season watching James Maddison dominate the Championship in an average team. When he got his deserved move to the Premier League, he looked at home right away. England’s strikers would love playing alongside him. Barkley is only picked ahead of him because he plays for Chelsea.

Sensing an anti-Ross Barkley thing happening tonight…

Team news – England

18:55: Gareth Southgate makes three changes from the side who battered Bulgaria 4-0 on Saturday.

Kieran Trippier, Danny Rose and Marcus Rashford drop out, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho coming in.

Nice and simple that one. 4-2-3-1 for England with captain Harry Kane leading the line.

Bernard Challandes = Legend

18:50: Well… Bernard Challandes is quite something, isn’t he?

The Kosovo manager gave a crazy/loud/frantic/impassioned (select your own adjective) press conference ahead of the fixture – shouting at the top of his voice that England are the best team in the world.

“We are Kosovo and we are here against one of the best teams in the world, in my opinion – the best team in the world,” Challandes said.

“I think it is in my philosophy that if we don’t dream it is unnecessary to play such games, we should dream and do all that is possible to disturb England.

“If I say ‘we come to win’, I think a lot of people think that is pretentious; if I say ‘it is not possible to win against England’, I must change my job.”

May want to turn the volume down for this one…

The standings…

18:45: Is there any point in looking at the standings? “Kind of,” he says while doing it anyway.

It’s a perfect three from three for Gareth Southgate’s England with a healthy +13 goal difference. Kosovo are second with eight points and the Czech Republic follow next with six points.

Bulgaria are effectively out on two points from five, while Montenegro are on the same points having played a game less.

England XI

18:40: Well the wait (if you cared) is over. Gareth Southgate has announced his starting XI and it does include Jadon Sancho.

England XI: Pickford, Alexander-Arnold, Chilwell, Rice, Keane, Maguire, Sterling, Henderson, Kane, Barkley, Sancho.

Subs: Trippier, Heaton, Rose, Gomez, Mings, Winks, Mount, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Maddison, Rashford, Pope, Wilson.

Evening…

18:35: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of England vs Kosovo.

How’s everyone doing during the international break? I know it’s a difficult time to be starved of Premier League action – but we’ve just got four days to last.

Tonight should be a very good match, actually. Kosovo might sound like ideal whipping boys but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

They are good. They are very good. They haven’t lost in their last 15 matches in all competitions.

Will that fine record come to a crushing end at St Mary’s Stadium? Let’s find out.

England vs Kosovo – Team News

Gareth Southgate is expected to start Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho against Kosovo this evening.

England head into their fourth game of Euro 2020 qualifying fresh off the back of a convincing 4–0 win over Bulgaria at Wembley on Saturday.

Trippier was rewarded for a strong start at Atletico Madrid after leaving Tottenham in the summer but Alexander-Arnold is seen as the long-term option in the position.

Elsewhere, teenage sensation Jadon Sancho is primed to come back into the fore with Marcus Rashford making way.

Southgate is otherwise expected to stick with the same players as Saturday with Jordan Pickford retaining his No 1 spot and Michael Keane and Harry Maguire buttressing the side.
